| Epipedobates bassleri - "Orange" |
|
EB-CHO Please inquire for pricing The orange E. bassleri (EB-CHO) is more variable than we originally thought after collecting the animals for our initial small breeding group. As offspring grew we noticed some variation in colour and pattern appearing amongst the offspring, some were more yellowish, while others were taking on the appearance of a much darker orange, some were more coloured, others less. We decided we needed to return to the locality of our founder group and investigate further. What we found was that the initial population we discovered was more variable than we initially realized, with some of the adults being much darker, and others more yellow. Overall quite variable. The situation became even more interesting as we explored neighboring areas to the north and the south of this initial locality. What we found was the north bassleri, while similar in pattern were predominantly yellow, and those to the south became progressively darker orange. Geographically these occur along the same spur of the same cordillera, so it appears that we have one large population with several sub-poulations, and a gradual bio-geographical transition from yellow towards red.
Above are pictures of the yellow individual from the north of this range, a few individuals from the orange population which we are offering now to better demonstrate the possible variability, as well as the dark orange ones from the south. As can be seen characteristics from both the north and south may be present in these frogs (EB-CHO) making a beautiful frog even more interesting. |
