Dendrobates leucomelas

Dendrobates leucomelas "Guyana Banded"
Small numbers of this frog have been exported from Guyana over the course of the past couple years. The thick, broad bands liken them in some respect to O. lehmanni. The Guyana leucomelas are larger overall than their Venezuelan counterparts.

Dendrobates leucomelas "Guyana Yellow"
At the same time we acquired our Guyana Banded Leucomelas, we also acquired some of these Leucomelas. They look nearly identical to the common leucomelas already long in the hobby, however are noticeably larger. Egg size and clutch size are also noticeably larger than in the other form of leucomelas we keep.

Dendrobates leucomelas "Orange Banded"
The bands actually range in colour from a deep yellow to orange, and of course colour is often in the eye of the beholder. Our stock comes from one of the pioneering Canadian dart frog keepers and accomplished herpetoculturist Hilde Wagner.

The yellow banded or bumble bee frog as it is often affectionately called is consistently one of the most popular species amongst enthusiasts. Though it is represented in captivity by comparatively few phenotypes, the bold nature and beautiful call more than accommodate. Leucomelas is a truly spectacular vivarium inhabitant that does especially well when kept in groups. This is an excellent beginner species that is affordably priced and is very hardy and forgiving of little mistakes that sometimes happen when first starting out in the hobby.
Found primarily in Venezuela, recent exports of wild caught animals from Guyana have come in, including the large "Guyana Banded".
