Ranitomeya fantastica

Ranitomeya fantastica
Ranitomeya fantastica "Lowland" (RF-CLR7)
There is much variation represented in these frogs, the orange crown, and the blue/white dorsal reticulum all vary from frog to frog. This individual is a truly spectacular one, photographed in the biotope.

Ranitomeya fantastica "Lowland" (RF-CLR7)
Another variant of the morph. Lowland fantastica hails from a highly restricted area of distribution under heavy agricultural pressure.

No two lowland fantastica are the same.
Ranitomeya fantastica
Ranitomeya fantastica "Caynarachi" (RF-ALCM)
Most commonly known from the Alto Caynarachi valley, and the neighbouring mountains these fantastica have long been considered the nominal form, but that designation belongs to those animals originating further east in the lowland forests of western Loreto. (See Brown et. all, 2008) Our breeding stock was collected around 350 meters at the base of the Cordillera Escalera.

Aptly named, this Peruvian endemic is elusive in nature. Primarily a lowland species, at least one morph (Caynarachi Valley type) ventures into the mid elevation forests of the Cordillera Escalera reaching elevations of 1000m. This spectacular frog is unfortunately often shy in the terrarium. It is our experience when kept as a small colony fantastica, regardless of locality will embolden over time, especially as they reproduce. A well planted tank providing plenty of places to hide will help these frogs feel more secure and encourage them to become more visible. Once established these frogs are very hardy and rewarding captives, and present no specific difficulties. Fantastica is an excellent choice for intermediate hobbyists with some experience with other Ranitomeya species.
