Ranitomeya variabilis “Highland” (RVA-CTYANT)
Our highland variabilis originate from a cloud shrouded and bromeliad laden ridge at 1100m in the Cordillera Escalera. Here nighttime temperatures may fall into the 50’s(F) however such cool condition are not necessary in captivity as these frogs thrive at temperatures in the mid 70’sF.

Ranitomeya variabilis “Southern” (RV-ALTSH)
The yellow dorsal colouration appears to develop with the age of the frog. In our experience metamorphs are noticeably greener, though some animals carry a greenish hue into adulthood.

The southern form of R. variabilis hails from drier forest regions to the southwest of the Tarapoto valley.

Similar in all regards to R. ventrimaculata, variabilis is essentially an altitudinal variant of ventrimaculata. Primarily found in montane regions between 300-1200m of the east Andean foothills of Peru. In certain lower elevations variabilis may exhibit the pattern highly reminiscent of what would be expected from ventrimacula. The southern form is larger and is found in the lower strata of the forest, and breeds frequently in terrestrial plants such as xanthasomas. Regardless of origin, variabilis are spectacular animals and in most cases will display well in a well planted vivarium. Hardy animals well suited for a first venture into keeping Ranitomeya species.
