C. calcarifer is an uncommon treefrog, sporadically distributed throughout low and mid elevation forest from Costa Rica through north western Ecuador. It lives in the mid to upper strata of the forest, and usually ascends only to breed in water filled tree-hollows or stumps. Encounters with this frog in the rainforest are uncommon, and only a few groups exist in captivity, primarily within the confines of zoos and institutions within the US and Europe.

Brian Kubicki has been working with the species at the CRARC reserve for the better part of the decade observing them both in captivity, and doing intensive habitat restoration and augmentation. His work has allowed the wild population of C. calcarifer throughout his reserve to thrive and grow, to the point that today, artificial breeding sites throughout the reserve teem consistently with tadpoles and adult frogs are now a common sight within the reserve.
