Understory Update – December 2017

2017 is almost in the bag! This seemed like a particularly busy year for us and things went by in a blur. We are anticipating a busy and exciting year for 2018.

We will have, for the first time in a few years, more captive bred Cruziohyla calcarifer from CRARC stock. The little froglets are adorable and are growing well now. They will be available directly through us if in Canada or through our international distributors with the first shipments of the year.

In addition to this, we have some absolutely stunning Ameerega bassleri of the yellow form available. These vibrant frogs are a common sight throughout the Cordillera Escalera but still uncommon in captivity. For those of you looking to add a bold vibrant and uncommon Ameerega to your collection, these are ones not to miss, and I think we have priced them quite fairly. I am really excited about these bassleri, they really are stunning.

As usual we have lots of Ranitomeya and Dendrobatid species as well, with some species now being offered at reduced pricing.

We just received an interesting availability list from wikiri. We anticipate an import in February, and these will be available for pre order only. We won’t be stocking these species but will continue to do imports as long as there is enough interest to justify a shipment. The atelopus we received on the last shipment were incredible. It’s a real milestone to have legitimately captive bred atelopus available to hobbyists.

We will be busy in Peru with tours again this coming year. Our frog themed tour schedule will be released shortly. If those dates don’t work for you, or you would rather see a different location(s) then don’t hesitate to reach out for us and we can customize a tour for you.

Speaking of tours, we are working again with professional wildlife photographer Andrew McLachlan. He is offering a really unique photography workshop in Peru at the end of June of 2018. This workshop’s theme will have an emphasis on landscapes and microfauna. If you are a budding photographer and want a chance to immerse yourself in the rainforests of Peru and learn from a professional photographer this is the trip for you. Space is very limited and will be based out of our field house in Tarapoto. For more info on this please contact Andrew directly.

As always, customers in Europe can get Understory frogs from one of the three shops there that we work with; customers in Canada and the US can email us directly and customers in southern Ontario can pick frogs up at any of the Expos that we attend in the GTA. The last Expo for 2017 is in Downsview on December 10th.

Thanks for your continued support!
