Description
The Andean Marsupial Frog, Gastrotheca riobambae! For many of you, and myself included, this is the first time I have seen (within the last 15 years) any Gastrotheca species on the market. Aside from a few Gastrotheca cornuta in institutions, the curious marsupial frogs of any species are sparse in captivity.
We received a small shipment of these CB beauties in early April from WIKIRI and they have done exceedingly well. They are now easily sexable and will be sold in trios, which in most cases will consist of 1 male to 2 females. There were significantly more females than males on this first shipment. Females are easily distinguished by the presence of the pouch opening on the dorsum where the male places fertilized eggs!
As the pictures show, this species is highly variable, adorned in shades of green, gold, brown and white; each individual is unique. They are undemanding captives, and exceedingly hardy, already feeding on food as large as full grown crickets.
