Dendrobates auratus "Costa Rican Green and Black"
Dendrobates auratus "Costa Rican Green and Black"
Dendrobates auratus is a medium to large sized poison frog distributed throughout central America from Nicaragua through to extreme northern regions of Colombia, with introduced populations found in Hawaii. Throughout its range, auratus is distributed in lowland and pre-montane forest regions, occasionally venturing above 1000m. Auratus may frequently be found in close proximity to human settlements, in highly disturbed habitats and even within the confines of larger cities (Siquirres, Costa Rica).
In captivity, auratus has earned the deserved reputation of being a good beginner species, given its hardy nature, abundance, and affordable price. The variety of phenotypes represented within the species add to its intrigue and desirability and has earned auratus of one form or another a place in almost every poison frog collection.
The Costa Rican Green and Black is a large morph distrubed broathry throughout Atlantic Costa Rica and into Nicaragua as well.
